Biometrics: A Step Towards A Safer World
Earlier this year, I wrote an article on cybersecurity. However, this does not eliminate physical, or normal security. Biometrics, a relatively new tool used to secure places of interest and to identify people. There are numerous types of biometrics, but the most useful one is probably iris recognition. Companies or government facilities enter a picture of a person's iris into a database. Then, when that individual arrives, the programming enables the device to identify the person. This eliminates the hassle created by keycards and PINS. Another example is gait analysis. This technique identifies a person by the way they walk, the muscles move, and talk. It is applied mostly in athletic facilities to rehabilitate injured athletes. It can also be used in safes holding important or classified information, so that no breaking-in ideas can be used. Perhaps the most interesting one is DNA biometrics. In the case of the Golden State Killer, police used DNA to find his relatives and caught him within days. Another application is immigration. Border Patrol using biometrics now can match people to their actual identities, and find out who is illegally being processed. It will help give people new life, while also keeping that life well-protected. Biometrics is an outstanding new idea which very well could prove to be the most important security idea yet created by humanity.
